Perinatal Perfectionism: Using Internal Family Systems to Heal Inner Critics

New motherhood is rife with “mommy wars” and high-pressure messages about how to mother best, sending vulnerable moms into perfectionistic overdrive. Internal Family Systems approaches perfectionism as a "part", and relaxes the system by encouraging insight, "unblending" and most of all, connection with compassionate internal resources. Learn the components of a perfectionistic system and how to appreciate and heal inner critics, including your own.

This workshop is designed primarily for therapists who are excited about Internal Family Systems and its incredible healing potential. A basic introduction to IFS terms and concepts will be provided. IFS is a model for understanding and relating to our inner world from the perspective that there are different parts of us imbued with historical fears, hopes and beliefs. Our parts organize and act in understandable (though often outdated) ways. At our core is a Self that is distinct from our parts and has an innate capacity to lead with confidence, compassion and wholeness. IFS supports people in unburdening our fear-based younger parts and becoming Self-led. 

Objectives for this workshop:

1. Demonstrate understanding of basic IFS terminology including parts, Self energy and blending/unblending.
2. Identify the two primary sources of external criticism AND describe how they influence the formation of inner critics.
3. Articulate two ways in which the perinatal period increases susceptibility to perfectionism.
4. Name the three IFS steps to bring healing to a perfectionistic system.

This workshop offers a didactic component as well as guided meditation, writing, drawing and sharing with a supportive group.

Recording: 

This training will be recorded and made available to registrants for 2 weeks following September 29th.

Continuing education: 

Postpartum Support International has approved this course for continuing education, relevant to advanced training for obtaining PMH-C's. California therapists can earn 3 CEUs upon completion of this course ($15 additional fee).

The fine print:

Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences or any state licensing boards that honor credits from California. This course will be useful to anyone engaging closely with matrescent women.

Requests for a full refund should be submitted by email to our Practice Manager Maristella Martinez at mari@familytreewellness.org, no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of the course. An administrative fee of $25 will be assessed. Cancellations occurring within 2 weeks of course start date are eligible for a partial refund equal to 75% of the course fee. If the course is being offered again, participants can request to postpone attendance until next course start date, and those requests must be received in writing, by email and will be assessed a $25 administrative fee. Refunds will be issued within 5 business days.
